Space sovereignty
The unenforceable agreement also provides that the exploration and use of outer space “shall be the province of all mankind and shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries, irrespective of their degree of economic or scientific development.” Recent actions taken by the Obama administration indicate that it supports the concept of governing outer space for the collective good of humanity...thus the recent statement of NASA Administrator Charles Bolden that “NASA is not only a space exploration agency, but also an earth improvement agency.”
But what if just one nation disagrees...and uses it's technology to gain a military or economic monopolistic control of space? THe danger to our technologically dependent society is already at risk from the increasing quantity of space junk. If just one nation ignores this danger it puts an increased burden on other states committed to reducing the number of fragments that can destroy our satellite controlled society.
